What's Up with the Snacking Avocado?

Mar 19, 2021

What's Up with the Snacking Avocado?

Have you ever looked at a snack and wondered, where did this come from? What’s it in? Is it really as healthy as the label leads on to be?

If you’re like us, probably only about 4595679 times. In fact, that was part of the reason our founder Andy started Earnest Eats. To create healthy, on-the-go breakfast foods and snacks that wear their ingredients and (hearts) on their sleeves.

Our foods are rich in nutrition and reflect cultures around the world, while giving them our own little Earnest twist. Our new Snacking Avocado is no exception! These freeze-dried avocado slices are crisp and crunchy like a chip, yet made from real avocado and totally healthy. They’re keto and packed with healthy fats, and super simple ingredients. AND they come from the mecca of avocado harvesting Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico–on a ranch that started planting organic avocados over 10 years ago.

Because we know you’re just as curious as we are when it comes to where your favorite foods come from, we want to give you a BTS look at bringing our Snack Avocado from the farm to your front door. So we asked our farmer extroidernair and avo expert, Juan Carlos, to break it all down for you!

Earnest Eats: What makes your Hass avocados so, well, earnest?

Juan Carlos: We use a special technique where we implant the Hass avocados on the bark of a criollo avocado tree, which is much stronger. This allows us to grow Hass avocados using the roots and bark of a stronger avocado tree to prevent disease.

We don’t use any chemical fertilizers. Instead, we collect sheep and horse droppings from the ranch and let the worms do their job. They decompose all organic materials and make the best fertilizer to safely and effectively deliver vital nutrients to your avocado trees.

Earnest Eats: How do you lock in all the taste of a perfectly ripe avocado?

Juan Carlos: Once the avocados start growing, we measure and assess them one by one until they reach just the right size for us to pick. Then we cut the avocados from the trees, collect them in boxes, and transport them from the ranch to our nearby facility where the freeze drying process begins.

Earnest Eats: How do they go from avocados to crispy avocado slices that last?

Juan Carlos: “After the avocados are harvested, we prepare them by hand-peeling and slicing them. We soak them in fresh citrus juice and season them up, all by hand. Then, we immediately freeze-dry them to lock in nutrition and flavor.”

And that’s how the magic happens. We hope you loved this behind the scene’s look at our new Snacking Avocado. Grab ‘em while you can, and DM us at @earnesteats with any other questions you have for Juan Carlos!
